Today's A. Film News

What? A. Film News on a blog called A. Film L.A.?
Yes! Today, the day that our Asterix and the Vikings opens in Denmark, we celebrate that the picture side of our next feature, The Ugly Duckling and Me is done. It's officially in post-production. See images from the film on the A. Film web page.

It's exciting to see that this page has had visitors from 25 countries. Keep the comments coming!

Hi Hans. What A. Film features are available in North America on DVD or are scheduled to be released?

None of our own features are available in North America, for several reasons. The distributors of our most high-end films have tried for theatrical release, which is near impossible, and cuts off the video market. Many of the films have been produced for a budget that allowed the films to earn their money back in Denmark - a country of six million people, but I believe their quality would have been good enough for DVD in North America - but there the distribution has failed. I have NO idea how Asterix will fare. Our upcoming film The Ugly Duckling and Me might do a lot better, as we just tried to make a good film without trying to "make the money happy." Warners Germany, who invested a bit in it, tells us it will give it their A treatment in distribution in Germany, but outside, again, who knows. We have very little say in foreign distribution.

On the other hand, I found a DVD with episodes of our H.C. Andersen TV series The Fairytaler (US. The Fairytales) in BestBuy in Orange County CA a month ago. Among, of course, several of the features we subcontracted animation on, like FernGully (we did 15 min animation on that), Don Bluth's Thumbelina, Amblimation's Balto, Once Upon A Forest, Quest for Camelot, and the latest Eight Crazy Nights. We have also subcontracted storyboards on several films, like FernGully, Pebble and the Penguin, and Tarzan II...

We believe we can do more and even better stuff, and that's why I am working on the creation of A. Film L.A., to bring us closer to the "source" of the film business.

If the characters and comic books are well known, then I would not be surprised you'll see the film turning up at some time. I remember that our Help! I'm a Fish was released theatrically in many countries I hadn't really thought of, like Brazil and Taiwan--where our Terkel in Trouble came out on DVD, as well... And I have a Japanese DVD of Help! I'm a Fish, maybe the only official NTSC release (as the eBay copies are not original, I believe) - though it is Region 2.
So - we'll see!

Hi (again) Hans,

I know I'm kind of harassing you, but you are doing a great job!

Do you know if there are copies of 'Terkel' in NTSC on DVD? I'm asking because it was screened in Toronto (with English subtitles) last summer, and I missed it. I imagine the 'Asterix' DVDs will depend on where it's released? So far it looks like it'll be PAL all the way.

Terkel in NTSC: I don't think so. But I'm sure it will come, in time...
