Prod. RM15 - The Whalers

Following a question on the GoldenAgeCartoons forum, here is the draft for this classic short featuring Mickey, Donald and Goofy.

Directed by Dave Hand and Dick Huemer (IMDb) with music by Albert Hay Malotte, it was released 8/19/1938.
Animated by Ed Love, Marvin Woodward, Art Babbitt, Frank Oreb, Robert Leffingwell, Louie Schmidt, Lee Moorehouse, Al Eugster, with scenes by Josh Meador, Eric Larson, Preston Blair and Milt Schaffer...

I thought I recognised Ed Love's animation in the opening scenes, but after making the mistake about Eugster I decided to keep my electronic mouth shut. :) It's also nice to get some more Marvin Woodward animation identified.

"The Whalers" is quite a late Mickey-Donald-Goofy short, and Mickey's character has become more and more diluted, when you compare him to the boastful, playful but heroic character from "On Ice"... it seems out of character for Donald rather than Mickey to be the one to attempt to rescue Goofy. Mickey's main scene, with the bucket, is fairly generic. In fact, looking at this cartoon alongside "Tugboat Mickey", their roles are more-or-less reversed. The star of "The Whalers" for me is Goofy (and it seems the star animator was Babbitt), but it's a pity he doesn't have the Pinto Colvig voice.

Thanks again, Hans!

By any chance do you have the draft for "Bambi" available? I watched it for the first time in ages this weekend (and really enjoyed it), and was dumbstruck by the animation of Thumper falling in love. Or do you know offhand who was responsible for that work?

Best,
THAD
