I wonder what's up with the big jump from 4.9 to 7? It looks like something else (sequences 5 and 6) was at one point meant to take place between these sequences but got removed. I guess there's no way of knowing how much was cut because the length of a "sequence" can vary considerably... the entire first act is Sequence 1, followed by decimal places, while Sequence 2 is the very short bit outside Gepetto's house. Sequences 5 and 6 could have been anything between these lengths, and may or may not have been divided into decimal places.
Hmmm, aren't there rumours of a "forest fire" sequence which was partially animated and re-used for "Bambi"?
OK, after having time to look at the draft properly, and compare it with the film, a couple of oddities have come up... one of which seems related to the Tate/Culhane/Ferguson fiasco.
Firstly... what's up with the numbering? The first shot is #21!
Second, there are several shots where two (character) animators are credited where you'd expect only one. Scene 22 features all three characters, and only one credited animator - Norman Tate. This is followed by several shots of *just* Foulfellow, animated solely by Tate. (Or, we may assume, Culhane or Ferguson, assisted by Tate) However, scenes 25, 27, 31, etc. all contain only one character - the Coachman - but both Nichols AND "Fergy", as well as the effects animator, are credited. Similarly scene 30 is only of Foulfellow, but it is credited to Fraser and Fergy.
So what's the deal here?
If I can make a wild speculation...
Maybe Ferguson and Culhane animated a rough version of the scene themselves, and the rough animation was then gone over by Nichols, Fraser and Tate? Tate's scenes, plus the big close-up of the Coachman, credited to Nichols, are the only scenes without Fergy's name on them. So my guess is that Tate, and perhaps Nichols for that one scene, was actually going over rough drawings by Culhane and mis-remembered it as being Ferguson's drawings. Therefore before Culhane left, the draft would have read "Culhane, Tate (effects animator)" for these scenes.
It's just a theory which probably doesn't square with some insider knowledge about how animation was credited, but I thought I may as well throw it out here.
