23242526272829
Seq. 06.0 "Menagerie - Mrs. Jumbo Goes Berserk"
Directed by Wilfred Jackson, assistant director Jacques [Roberts?], layout Terrell Stapp.
This 2nd draft dated 4/8/41.

We start quietly with some nice scenes of Dumbo being washed by Mrs. Jumbo, by Bill Tytla, with effects by Art Palmer, Cornett Wood and Sandy Strother. A crowd scene by John McManus. Then Dumbo and Kids by Claude Smith, Mrs. Jumbo by Bill Shull (Bill Tytla's erstwhile assistant), Ringmaster by Walt Kelly of Pogo fame (see elsewhere on this blog for more on him) and some Roustabouts by Jack Campbell.

That kid looks just like Lampwick, but he isn't animated by Fred Moore. How 'bout that?

I had thought that Tytla probably animated the scenes of Dumbo and his mother playing... although some of Mrs Jumbo's expressions seem a little unconvinvcing to me (maybe just the way her eyes are designed).

A lot of scenes here didn't make it into the final film (or are slightly different) -- for example, Skinnay never rides Dumbo like a "Roman chariot". The Ringmaster's final line "Put her in jail!" also got taken out.

I've actually always thought that Fred Moore animated those pesky boys, because it looks so much Moore's style and his boyish drawings.

Zartok, I agree with you that that Skinnay looks really like Lampwick from Pinocchio, and I thought it had to be a Fred Moore drawing, but it turns out that Claude Smith animated the pesky boys, I wonder if he had ever been an assistant to Freddie, because he sure draws like Freddie!

I've always wondered who animated Mrs. Jumbo going mental, I thought that Bill Tytla did all that, but it turns out that Bill Shull did the animation (who used to be the assistant to Bill Tytla, and worked a lot with him on the films.)
