Prod. 2006 - Dumbo (XXV)

9394
Seq. 23.0 "Success Montage"
Directed by Ben Sharpsteen, assistant director Dick Lyford.
This 1st draft dated 3/31/41.

Only a few effects animators are indicated: Paul Kossoff, Don Tobin, John Reed.
On the other hand, there isn't much character animation in this, the final sequence.

This concludes my posting of the animation draft for prod. 2006, Dumbo. This is the information as kept in the Background Morgue. Let me reiterate: this document was not prepared for historical reasons, it was a working document, and as such can show different information as was actual. We have seen that several scenes were changed, and it would be very possible that animators have been reassigned scenes after these pages were written. Still, it is something...

Next up... I do not know yet! We'll see!

It's a shame that so much information is missing, but it's great to have all the information that *is* on the draft... and not only the animator assignments. Check my blog in a few days for a guide to the scenes/lines included on the draft which were cut from the film.

Thanks (again?) for posting the draft!

Only effects animators. And no layout artist! You'd figure a layout man would be insturmental in everystage of production, with all the still images and such. Sharpsteen probably did it all himself!

As far as aniamtors go, it isn't too hard to tell that Bill Tytla handles shots 11 and 12, and I'd say Walt Kelly animates shot 10.

Dick Lyford worked on "7 Wise Dwarfs", one of the notorious Canadian Bond cartoons with reused animation. Some say he became a famous documentarian after this.

Thanks alot for showing the draft, Mr. Perk! This was very fun and exciting. I've wanted to see this particular draft for awhile. Now if only we could see those "Scene folders" you speak of!

If you need any ideas for what to do next, might I suggest a protion of "Melody Time", if you have any? It would be economical to post.

Thanks for the Dumbo drafts.
I usually don't post comments because it's not easy for me to write in English, but I'm very grateful to you for posting this important document.

Some general thoughts on the information in the draft:

I'm surprised Bill Roberts directed so much, especially as he was also working on "Bambi". I guess that's why he shares his sequences with John Elliotte. Hmmm, I wonder if all his "Bambi" sequences are co-directed with Paul Satterfield? At least Satterfield gets on-screen credit.

There are very few layout artists mentioned on the draft - I guess this is because the storyboards were used as layouts, leaving very little for the actual layout artists to do. Also, the two art directors from the opening credits (Herb Ryman and Charles Payzant) not to be mentioned on the draft are the first and last credited, respectively - I wonder if this means anything. It probably does in Ryman's case... In the "Pinocchio" draft Charles Philippi, the first-credited art director, is not credited with layouts on any sequence. Also, in Christopher Finch's "The Art of Walt Disney" he says that the "Bambi" layout team was "headed" by Thomas Codrick, the first credited art director. This suggests the "art director" credits list an art supervisor first, followed by the layout artists.

Hmmm... I wonder if Codrick is credited as the layout man on any sequences in the "Bambi" draft?

Finally, it's surprising how little Don Patterson or Jack Campbell seem to have animated, given that they are credited on screen. Maybe they did more scenes which aren't mentioned on the draft, but I'm not sure what those would be...

Thank you very much for your fine postings of the entire "Dumbo" draft, (Well, nearly almost).

I first saw "Dumbo" back when I was about 2 or 3 years old, and it was part of a VHS copy, (Dumbo had been in video for many years).

As I got older and I thought that this film was babyish and for kiddies, but looking back at the film 2 years old, made me realise how much of a great-achievement this film has been!

Good job Hans, keep up with some more drafts for the future! ;-)

P.S. Sorry if I haveen't commented in a week, because I spent my week in an activity centre in "Hindleap Warren" in Ashdown Forest, England. Its part of a school trip, and I had the time of my life there! I had lots of fun!

John V, I agree with you, I'm also suprised to see that Jack Campbell and Don Patterson with little contributions to the film, even though thery're in the on-screen, I thought that Jack Campbell was doing the crowds in the Clowns performance, he did the roustabouts, probably because there more human-like, (Jack was animating Snow White the princess, The Blue Fairy in Pinocchio, the Centaurs in Fantasia ]Pastoral Symphony], and for Lady and the Tramp, I'm guessing he did the darlings!) or did he? I wonder what animation he did for Lady and the Tramp.

Besides, I think that maybe Herb Ryman and Charles Payzant were just doing Art work, instead of layouts,

I thought that Ward Kimball was animating Casey Jr, because he mentioned in the "Disney Family Album" that he designed the character, and he showed his original design, but Casey Jr, has been mainly animated by Don Patterson and a number of effect animators like: Paul Kossoff, Don Tobin, and ofcourse John Reed.

Its also suprising to see a lot of George Rowley's name in the draft, and he seemed to have done a number of effects.
