Ah - I believe that Evinrude's vocal effects were done by James McDonald, who also did the voice of Mickey Mouse after Walt Disney resigned in 1946 or 1947.
I wouldn't say Walt resigned... ;-)
He felt too busy to do it, and basically said to Jim MacDonald "you do it!"
One can see MacDonald do the Evinrude sound on the previously mentioned Thames TV special (in part 2 of 2).
Oh yes, apparrentally one of the reasons why Walt stopped voicing Mickey was because of his heavy smoking and his voice became hoarse.
However, I must admit with McDonald's Mickey just isn't quite THE Mickey, but close enough...
Walt Disney said about Mickey, "he still speaks for me, and I still speak for him!"
You mention the Thames TV special again.
Is that the old UK Thames TV?
Do you know of anywhere we can see this fabled documentary? I'd love to see it.
David, I wish I could find it! I looked through all my VHS'es yesterday, and I think the ONLY one I did not see was just this one! (My original source is a 1978 Philips VCR 1502 with the square tapes, off Dutch TV. I still have those tapes, but the player died many years ago. I copied the tapes to VHS when the old player still worked, its last hurrah...)
I still have some Disney VHS tapes and I remember I use to have dozens of the Disney films and sadly some years ago - I sold them to friends and I only have a few VHS copies today (Fantasia, Pinocchio, Jungle Book, Alice in Wonderland, and a few others). I used to love the old Disney VHS copies when I was really small and probably my favourite of the lot was 'Alice in Wonderland' and I used to keep playing it over and over again and I'm surprised that the tape still works, and its like 20 years old!!
Although most of these films I've sold and I've tried to find are now available on YouTube, and I can watch them again!
This sequence really makes me think; was Art Stevens on as director through the entire length of production, or was he just brought on when John Lounsbery died to finish things up? Some earlier drafts would clear htings up.
Notice that scene 289 includes the note "Possibly pull back to include the second croc and teddy bear" and scene 299 includes the note "Possibly Ellie Mae comes into scene". In the film, they included the former but not the latter. It's interesting that they were still deciding what to include in each shot when they wrote this - so, had they not decided whether to animate these elements (second croc, Ellie Mae), or had they been animated already and they just weren't sure whether to use them? Or, had they animated the whole sequence without those elements, but expected they ould find some animation elsewhere they could reuse?
