Here is the first part (pages 1 through 7) of the lecture on composition by layout man Charles Edgar Philippi (Iowa 12/4/1898 - Los Angeles 7/2/1954) who worked at Disney from 1931 to 1952.

Ok, writing after my comment to the next post, so all is backwards here, but fear not, Hans, these notes have been and are being used in courses in composition! Namely mine out at Sheridan in Oakville, Canada, where i teach layout and design , 2nd year, in the BAA Program along side Mark M. And were given to me by Bill Matthews when he taught ME in self same course. I would imagine others must have them from him, too. let's go ask him...
